saucers

after “Buying Leeks” by Yosa Buson

Buying milk, walking
home under round clouds – saucers
for kittens against

the sky. The moon, swiss
cheese, rises east– kitten tongues
lap the dusk clouds up!

(Mewing kitten– a
tiny mouth mustached with milk.)
The sky, now cloudless–

the kittens, milk-drunk
and snockered. Cheese moon waning
in the night, arching–

Dawn – milk the kittens
haven't drank curdles in the
sun. Cheese moon– eaten!
